that Valentine's Day has existed for centuries and started with Valentine, a Bishop, who helped young soldiers in battle to marry? They were not allowed to marry by the order of the Emporer at the time, Claudius. He felt they would not make quality soldiers as they would be too attached to their families. Of course, Valentine was arrested and executed, despite being offered a life line of converty to the Roman Gods which he did not accept. Just before his execution, he asked for a pen and paper to write a farewell message to a lady whose eye sight he had restored through his faith. He wrote: "From your Valentine". So on February 14th, 296 CE Valentine was executed. Two hundred years later, 496CE the day became a Christian holiday - declared by Pope Gelasius - in his honour. It became a time to exchange love messages and St Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. This message then became cards, initially hand made, now commercially.
